They say you should never go back. But sometimes, it just makes sense.
In the case of Ilkay Gundogan and Manchester City, it just makes sense.
Gundogan ended his seven-year stint at the Etihad Stadium in the best way possible — City won the treble, beating Inter in the Champions League final a week after Gundogan scored twice in an FA Cup final victory over Manchester United.
That came a year on from Gundogan taking centre stage as City came from behind to beat Aston Villa and edge out Liverpool to the Premier League title.
Gundogan left a City legend, joining Barcelona on a free transfer. But a year on, the German’s stay in Catalonia is set to come to an end, with the Blaugrana aiming to create room in their budget to register new signing Dani Olmo. And it looks like his next destination will be his former stomping ground.
