Here, we look back at three highs and three lows from the Premier League, and FA Cup, weekend.
THE GOOD
Liverpool have the title wrapped up. It has been a while coming, with nobody doubting their likelihood of winning the crown since, really, the turn of the year. The Premier League is not the strongest this year, but Liverpool have been excellent — their consistency, their character and star power has been far too much for any other team to match. They fell behind to Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday, but there was never any doubt that they’d hit back — and hit back they did, powering to a 5-1 victory to cap their second Premier League title win in emphatic fashion. Arne Slot has built a winning machine; the task now will be to do it again next season.
Crystal Palace are into the FA Cup final. Nine years since their last appearance in the competition’s showpiece match, the Eagles will get another shot at winning the trophy for the first time. They were supreme against Aston Villa on Saturday, with Ismaila Sarr’s double coming on the back of Eberechi Eze’s opener. Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty miss at 1-0 could easily have derailed Palace, but Oliver Glasner’s team impressively kept their composure, and kept on what they had been doing so well. After coming under plenty of scrutiny at the start of the campaign, Glasner — who led Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League glory — has proved just what a fine coach he is. Palace will comfortably finish well clear of any relegation worries and could well win a trophy; Manchester City await on May 17th.
