Here, we look at the good, and the bad, from this weekend’s Premier League action.
THE GOOD
Amad Diallo was the hero for Manchester United in their extraordinary derby-day comeback at the Etihad, where Ruben Amorim’s dreams were made late on. It was a dour game — both teams setting out to avoid defeat, until Diallo, one of the only bright sparks throughout, lit the fire. It was the 22-year-old who not only capitalised on Matheus Nunes’ dismal backpass, but then drew the foul from the Manchester City midfielder that resulted in the 88th-minute penalty that was duly converted by Bruno Fernandes. Hardly two minutes later, it was Diallo who stole in behind the City defence, taking a brilliant first touch to nudge Lisandro Martinez’s lofted pass out of Ederson’s reach, to then finish cutely from a tight angle. Diallo has been one of the big winners since Amorim took charge, playing out on the right side, and he has more than repaid his head coach’s faith.
Jordan Pickford was the star of the show as Everton frustrated Ars
enal at Emirates Stadium, with Sean Dyche’s team holding out for a 0-0 draw. The Toffees hardly offered an attacking threat, and while James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite were both excellent when it came to dealing with Arsenal’s onslaught, Everton still needed their goalkeeper to come up big. Pickford made five saves, with most of those coming in the first half but the standout was a fantastic, instinctive stop to thwart Bukayo Saka early in the second period. Dyche prides himself on clean sheets, and Everton have — frankly — not had much else to write home about this season, but their goalkeeper is again proving just how reliable he is.
