Here, we look at the good, and the bad, from this weekend’s Premier League action.
THE GOOD
Vitor Pereira enjoyed the ideal start as Wolves boss, as the midlands club were on the right end of a new manager bounce. Goncalo Guedes, Rodrigo Gomes and Matheus Cunha were on target as Wolves cruised into a 3-0 lead by half-time against Leicester City. They remain in the bottom three, two points behind the Foxes, but this was the morale-boosting performance and victory the entire club needed. Manchester United, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest come next, though Wolves should not hold fear heading into the first two of those matches. At this stage of a season, two to three positive results can prove enough to turn a season around, and Wolves will be hoping their new boss provides just that.
Gabriel Jesus had not scored a Premier League goal since January, but doubled up inside the first 14 minutes at Crystal Palace on Saturday. Having scored a hat-trick against the Eagles in the EFL Cup, Jesus haunted Oliver Glasner’s team again, and he should have probably grabbed a third — it was his header off the post that resulted in Kai Havertz nodding home, while the Brazilian also fired straight at Dean Henderson in the build-up to Gabriel Martinelli making it 4-1. Jesus has never been prolific in the Premier League, but his second goal in particular — a fine, first-time, curling finish from the cusp of the area — was a glimpse of the quality he has at his disposal.
Bournemouth became just the second team to win consecutive league games away at Manchester United by at least three goals (via Opta), as Andoni Iraola’s team made another statement of intent. The Spaniard is surely a contender for manager of the season — he has the Cherries in fifth place, just three points off the top four, above Manchester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Tottenham and of course, United. Whether they are able to keep up this kind of form in the second half of the season remains to be seen, but Bournemouth have now beaten Arsenal and Man City at home, and United on the road. Keeping hold of Iraola in the summer might be their next big test.
