The Premier League is the world’s most-watched football competition, captivating the world and attracting some of the most exciting managers who battle it out for supremacy. Within this competitive environment, there are various dynamics to being a manager, with each individual employing unique strategies and approaches.
In this piece, we will break down three categories of manager:
Tactical
A manager that prioritises strategy and innovating, constantly seeking to outsmart their opponents through detailed analysis and carefully created game plans. They leave no detail overlooked. Their approach is deeply analytical, studying their opponents to potentially exploit any weaknesses in the opposition. Their teams are always prepared and flexible with the ability to adapt to any situation.
Authoritative
These managers take a more traditional or “old-school” approach, placing a strong emphasis on discipline, structure and respect. They are renowned for instilling a clear sense of order in their teams creating a well-organised, resilient side in which each player understands their role and responsibility. This approach creates a ‘no-nonsense’ environment, and the success of the team is built on hard work and consistency.
Motivational
These managers excel at instilling belief and confidence within their squads, which in return builds trust and unity among their players. Their emotional intelligence is pivotal in them being able to connect with their players on a personal level. As exceptional leaders, they inspire players to go the extra mile, driven by a deep sense of belief and commitment to the team’s cause. Their strong ability to motivate and elevate morale is key.
While most managers may embody elements of more than one category, for the purpose of this article, we have assigned each current Premier League manager to a single tier.
TACTICAL
