“Don’t tell us how to feel,” Jamie Carragher snapped on Sky Sports this week, words tinged irreverently with frustration. Right then, Jamie – no worries there. Feel your feelings, express them proudly, shout them honestly. Do what you need to do.

Because this – whatever this is – was always going to be about feeling. There is no room for facts and logic here. This is no clean break. This is feeling, raw and rattling, as it should be.

The open secret now confirmed is that Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool at the end of the season. What had long been whispered – first in dressing rooms, then on forums, and later in newsrooms – was finally made official this week, confirmed not with a bang but a flat whimper.

Trent sat down with the club’s media personnel on Monday to deliver a farewell message that felt strangely lifeless and lukewarm, emotionally sterile and wholly scripted. Straight out of the Mason Mount school of bridge burning there, Trent.

And that, perhaps, is what hurts Liverpool fans the most.
