There we have it. The eight quarter-finalists of Euro 2024 have been confirmed.
None of the favourites played particularly well, but all of them are through, though we did lose one of the most impressive teams from the group stage in Austria, who lost 2-1 to Türkiye in a thriller on Tuesday to wrap up the round of 16.
But how are the remaining teams shaping up?
Here, we’ve power-ranked the quarter-finalists.
8. TÜRKIYE
Mert Gunok’s spectacular save ensured Türkiye’s place in the quarter-finals, while Arda Güler continues to sparkle in attack. What’s even more impressive about Tuesday’s win over Austria is that Vincenzo Montella’s team got it done without their talisman, with Hakan Calhanoglu suspended.
However, despite their promising displays, it’s worth noting that Türkiye were hammered 3-0 by Portugal when they came up against one of the tournament heavyweights in Euro 2024. They’ll face the Netherlands next, and while they definitely have a strong chance, they come in at eighth on this list.
7. ENGLAND
The Three Lions should, on paper, be well up this list, but given the standard of their displays so far at Euro 2024, Gareth Southgate’s team come in at seventh.
Not that they should not have confidence of beating Switzerland, but it will take a much, much better performance than the frankly pathetic display England put in for 95 minutes against Slovakia in the last round.
They can be buoyed by that Jude Bellingham-inspired turnaround, though.
6. SWITZERLAND
Italy were the big-name casualties of the last 16, but to be honest, it should have come as no surprised that they could not match up to the organisation and efficiency of the Swiss, who are looking in fine fettle under Murat Yakin in Germany.
Granit Xhaka pulled the strings in midfield as Switzerland claimed a well-deserved 2-0 victory, and they arguably go into the tie against England as favourites on form.
However, if the Three Lions do turn it on, then they should have too much for the Swiss, which is why we’re ranking them in sixth.
5. PORTUGAL
After clicking into gear against Türkiye on matchday two, it’s fair to say Portugal have stalled in the last couple of matches.
